On Wednesday, September 16, The Ohio State University Esports program welcomed its 26-27 players at Media Day, celebrating their achievement of making the teams and presenting what’s in store for the upcoming season. The teams span Overwatch, Rocket League, Valorant, League of Legends, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate, all of which will compete in a variety of matches and tournaments throughout the school year.

The Power Esports Conference (PEC) and Big Esports Conference (BEC) are returning to the competitive schedule, but new this year, Ohio State is joining the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE), a nonprofit association devoted to supporting and growing collegiate esports across the country. Players across all teams were excited for this new announcement, eager to jump in and bring home their first win.

After the welcome presentation concluded, players got their headshots (both serious and silly) taken by the content team. During this time, the teams had time to start building their team spirit and sense of community that will last for the entire school year and beyond. I had the chance to ask team members, coaches, and staff what they are most excited for this season.

“I’m excited to work with the new premier players and produce great content for the arena!”

-Jenny Zhu, Content Manager

“I’m looking forward to seeing how the teams do in the new NACE conference.”

-Grace Osmanski, Community Manager

The esports staff play a crucial role in facilitating events, managing logistics, and supporting players and the program as a whole.

Team members, new and returning, all shared an excitement to play together, improve, and, of course, win!

“I can’t wait to work and practice with a team in a professional setting!”

-Jonathan “Ticleticle,” Gray League of Legends

“I’m excited for the travelling and winning!”

-Lucas “lao,” Overwatch Manager

If these answers are any indication, the energy at Media Day was high all around, kicking off the season to an incredible start. Visit esports.osu.edu/premier-teams to find out more about upcoming matches and tournaments!
